The amount of information that becomes available through
both the Internet and intranet is still growing rapidly and will continue to do
so. In fact, the information supply will show exponential growth. A good example
of this is the frequency with which the information on this website is modified,
which makes it impossible for most organizations to keep close track of the
changes.
Square has
developed a tool for making current information, that is available on external
websites that are relevant to your organization, accessible. This tool, the Web
Indexer, provides an easy to use administration facility which allows you to
indicate which external websites are important to your organization. These sites
will then be spidered, which means that an indexation of this vital information
will be included in an E-Finder collection. The E-Finder is an advanced search
engine with powerful functionality which can be purchased as an extension to the
BIBIS OPAC.
Depending on the branch your organization operates
in and your information requirements, a broad range of websites is available,
each offering a wealth of information. Examples include the websites of
Ministries, the Tax Authorities, your competitors, publicly available legal
information, branch organizations and consultancies.
With a simple
search command, the E-Finder can retrieve the most current information in your
field. To make your work even easier, the notification module automatically
keeps you informed of relevant developments, by sending you an e-mail. Based on
your registered interest profile, you will be informed of newly acquired
materials, including books, magazine articles, internal reports and external
websites.
In short,
the Square Web Indexer offers the following functionality:
- Selecting external
websites and maintaining these sites by adding, changing and removing links.
The number of websites that can be selected depends on the available storage
capacity on the (BIBIS) server.
- Updates with regard to
the selected websites; the Web Indexer will automatically check the selected
sites (preferably during the night), and process and re-index any mutations.
This feature requires the server to have access to the Internet.
- If mutations are found
and new information is therefore available, employees whose profile correspond
to the new information will receive a notification. (Naturally this requires
the availablity of both the notification module and e-mail
notification).
- In principle, all
websites are collected and displayed in a general collection in the E-Finder.
It is even possible to divide the websites collection into subject categories.
This tree structure will be identical in both the storage directory and in the
E-Finder.
