So, the Bibis OPAC is a supplement to Bibis
LMS, our library automation software. Many different types of media can be
included in the catalogue because Bibis LMS offers you the facility of varying
the title descriptions and copy descriptions per type.
This allows you to
decide for yourself what arrangement of categories you want to use. Bibis LMS
offers you the facility of making references in a title description to, for
example, an abstract, multi-media files such as images, audio and video
fragments and other references as well such as, for example, to a DTP text file.
There are input and change programs available for all possible
references.
Just like Bibis LMS, the Bibis OPAC is completely
built on web technology. You just give the search engine a query, and it will
set to work. From wide-ranging to specific, forwards and then back again. It is
the answer to the frequently-made request to 'be able to browse backwards as
well'. Another important aspect is that the Bibis LMS user requires just one
interface both for searching externally all over the world via the Internet and
consulting internally in their own library. What Square really had in mind was
the creation of a 'thin client', so that a 'thick' PC was no longer required.
One interface and a PC with sufficient memory and hard disk capacity suffices
for searching and for storing temporarily the information found. The browser is
an excellent interface. This web technology will obviously have an enormous
impact within the organization, with a high degree of acceptance of the
interface chosen. Because each employee will know the interface and be able to
use it. The consequences will be that the documents available will receive
immense usage and that superfluous instructions and helpdesk questions will be
reduced. In future everyone will create their own links and favorites themselves
in the browser.
The user can immediatly make use of the gathered results.
From logical locations in the search program the user can make orders or
reservations. These wishes will be forwarded to the library or Knowledge Center
through Bibis LMS.
