The client-browser
relationship
Bibis LMS has been completely rendered in web
technology, in a client-server relationship. Or rather: in a client-browser
relationship, because a roll-out of client software is completely superfluous in
Bibis LMS. This is because it has already taken place, which gives Bibis LMS a
number of extra facilities. In this way, when making a query in Bibis LMS you do
not have to go back via the logical package structure in order to see a previous
result. The browser's 'back' button is sufficient because the browser has cached
the pages. Indexing is full-text, so every word is accessible using the Verity
search engine. Bibis LMS does not, however, just carry out a full-text search
within the title descriptions, but also carries out a Boolean search in the
individual fields. You just give the search engine a query, and it will set to
work. From wide-ranging to specific, forwards and then back again. It is the
answer to the frequently-made request to 'be able to browse backwards as well'.
Another important aspect is that the Bibis LMS user requires just one interface
both for searching externally all over the world via the Internet and consulting
internally in their own library. What Square really had in mind was the creation
of a 'thin client', so that a 'thick' PC was no longer required. One interface
and a PC with sufficient memory and hard disk capacity suffices for searching
and for storing temporarily the information found. The browser is an excellent
interface. This web technology will obviously have an enormous impact within the
organization, with a high degree of acceptance of the interface chosen. Because
each employee will know the interface and be able to use it. The consequences
will be that the documents available will receive immense usage and that
superfluous instructions and helpdesk questions will be reduced. In future
everyone will create their own links and favorites themselves in the
browser.
Internet and Intranet
Bibis LMS is ready for both,
although Bibis LMS will generally be used in an Intranet environment or
local-area network. It is easy to adapt Bibis LMS for wide-area networks.
Because HTML is used, Bibis LMS can, of course, easily be modified to suit
particular house styles. Square has made it possible for a number of cosmetic
changes per customer to be made throughout the product by the use of style
sheets. Anyone who wants to expand in order to publish can use Bibis LMS for
this too: a few extra HTML pages are just added, the environment is, after all,
ready. In addition, Bibis LMS can easily be included in an existing
website.
